Kerala temple faces flak for having separate toilet for Brahmins

A controversy has erupted on social media after A separate toilet for Brahmins in Kuttumukku Mahadeva Temple in Thrissur district was spotted. Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB) initiated a probe into the issue.

The issue came to light when a Thrissur resident and a research student Arvind G Christo posted a picture on social media on Wednesday, showing the signboard of a separate toilet for Brahmins.

Christo said, “I had gone to attend the temple festival. When I saw a separate toilet board for Brahmins, I was shocked and took a picture. I posted it on social media and now it has gone viral. I am happy that the board will be removed.”

Kannan, an official of the temple committee, said the board was placed nearly two decades ago and nobody raised any complaint against it so far.

“That particular toilet was used by priests and other temple employees. We didn’t even notice that board…as soon as we came to know about it, we removed it and affixed a staff-only board,” he told PTI.

Also a CPI-M functionary and ward councillor, Kannan said the shrine and its management was against all kinds of unethical customs.

The temple official said they were planning to pursue legal measures against the man who posted the photo of the toilets on social media.
