Korean band BTS becomes first Asian act to win 2020 IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award

The South Korean band BTS has created history and emerged as the winners of 2020’s IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award. The K-pop band is the first in Asia to win the title.

The Grammy-nominated group is the only Asian group in the top 10 which included Taylor Swift, Drake, The Weekend, and Billie Eilish. The win marks the group’s continued success, after finishing second in 2018 and seventh in 2019.

Their album, Map of the Soul: 7, was a massive chart-topper, setting a Guinness World Record for the best-selling album in South Korea. ‘Dynamite’ also earned BTS a Grammy nomination in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, alongside stars like Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.

For unversed, the IFPI award is calculated according to an artist or a group’s worldwide performance across digital and physical music formats during the year, from streams to vinyl, and covers their entire body of work, making the K-pop septet RM, Jin, Suga, J-hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook, the best-selling artistes of 2020.

BTS, also known as the Bangtan Boys, was formed in 2013 and consists of seven members – Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook – who come from all over South Korea.
