Om Birla, Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament from Kota, has reportedly been selected as the speaker for the 17th Lok Sabha. Birla is expected to file his nominations at noon today, June 18.
The BJP leader is a two-time MP from Kota, he has also been the Member of Legislative Assembly from Kota South on three occasions. The 57-year-old defeated Ramnarain Meena of the Congress party by a whopping margin of nearly 2.79 lakh votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Om Birla’s wife Amit Birla told ANI that it was a very proud moment for the family. “It is a very proud and a happy moment for us. We are very thankful to the cabinet for choosing him,” she said.
The Speaker is the conventional head of the Lok. It is the Speaker who decides when a member speaks, how much time they get, what gets included in the official account and whether, in cases of a member causing a disturbance, they remain in the House or is expelled from it.
