Thiruvananthapuram: After extensive protests and requests from students, parents, and political leaders, APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University decided to postpone all the exams scheduled to begin on July 1.

The university authorities said the decision was made after students, parents and student unions complained about the varsity conducting the examinations during the pandemic. The BTech Hons examinations of KTU had begun on June 26 while the final semester engineering examinations were supposed to commence on July 1.

The varsity until a couple of days ago refused to agree to the demand for the exam date change. Instead, the authorities claimed to have put in place all precautionary arrangements for conducting examination by adhering to COVID norms, including social distancing.

For those students who think it is impossible to take the exam would be given another chance to take the examinations in the month of October, it said.

According to university authorities, given that the placement arrangement provides a large number of students recruited from employers through campus recruitment activities, it has worked hard to conduct the final semester examination.

Shashi Tharoor MP was among those who asked the state government and the universities concerned in the state to scrap their decision to conduct examinations amid COVID times.

KTU University vice chancellor M S Rajasree said the academic committee of the varsity will further decide to conduct the examinations.

The examination standing committee of the university syndicate which met here on Monday morning decided to postpone the exams. KTU pro vice chancellor S Ayoob presided over the subcommittee meeting and syndicate members P O J Labba, C Satheesh and G Venugopal attended.
