Lao National Day 2023: Lao National Day is observed annually in the Southeast Asian nation of Laos on December 2. The occasion commemorates the 1975 establishment of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the end of the monarchy’s reign.

Lao National Day History

Lao National Day is officially observed on the following Monday if it falls on a weekend.

Laos was a French protectorate for the majority of the 20th century. Resistance to French control intensified after World War II ended, prompting the Indochinese Communist Party to establish the Pathet Lao resistance organization. When Laos gained independence as a constitutional monarchy under the rule of King Sisavang Phoulivong in October 1953, the First Indochina War, as it is known, came to an end.

The trajectory of Laos towards transitioning to a communist republic commenced in 1975, when the Pathet Lao, backed by North Vietnam and the Soviet Union, overthrew the royalist Lao government and compelled the abdication of King Savang Vatthana.

On the same day, the Kaysone Phomvihane-led Pathet Lao government renamed the country the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

Despite being perceived as politically stable, the nation is comparatively impoverished in relation to adjacent countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, and India. Additionally, it is one of the few remaining communist states in the world, and despite implementing economic reforms in the wake of multiple conflicts, the landlocked nation continues to be impoverished and highly reliant on foreign assistance.
