New Delhi, Nov 19 ( IANS ) The Delhi Police have arrested eight members of the infamous lifafa gang and solved eight cases of robbery and cheating in Delhi. Three cars used in the crime have also been seized along with gold jewellery, three communication devices and 30 card cut-outs in shape of debit or credit cards.
The accused used to target commuters by offering them a lift in car and later on the pretext of police checking they influenced the commuters to put their valuable belongings in a lifafa (envelope).
To gain their confidence, they also used to play some audio clip on their communication device which looked like a walkie talkie. After getting their cash, ATM and its PIN they used to drop the victims at isolated stretches. When the victims used to check their envelopes, they found that their ATMs cards had been replaced with fake plastic cards and currency.
“It was noticed that in last few days several incidents of cheating were reported in the South West District. Accordingly victims were interrogated and technical evidences checked. The hard work of the police officials of PS R K Puram paid off and they succeeded in getting the make and the last 4 digit of a car which was used for the crime,” said Ingit Pratap Singh, DCP South West Delhi.
Acting On this clue a team to catch the accused was formed and several traps laid at different locations of R.K Puram and inputs were developed regarding criminals of similar modus operandi.
Late on Wednesday night the three accused were arrested who later disclosed that two more gangs are active and in the raids that followed in Trilokpuri area five more accused were arrested.
