New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Kanpur Lok Sabha MP Murli Manohar Joshi has announced that he has been asked by party to not contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2019, that are to kickoff in April.

A message doing the rounds on the social media addressed to voters of Kanpur and reportedly written by Joshi, reads, “Shri Ramlal General Secretary (Org.) Bharatiya Janata Party conveyed to me today that I should not contest the ensuing parliamentary election from Kanpur and elsewhere.”

In a statement to a news channel, the Kanpur MP said he was asked by party general secretary Ramlal to not contest the elections.

The Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh will be among the most stretched out as it will be held in seven phases as announced by the Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora on March 10.

Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency will go to polls in the fourth phase which is slated on April 29.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections Murli Manohar Joshi registered a landslide victory here, winning a whopping 56.84 per cent of the total votes cast. He defeated senior Congress leader and former Union Minsiter Sriprakash Jaiswal who remained Kanpur MP from 2004 to 2014.

In the last general elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party had sealed a remarkable 71 seats out of 80 with the then ruling party in the state Samajwadi Party getting just 5 seats. After the coming together of Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, a tough contest expected in India’s most populous state.
