Ahead of Madhya Pradesh polls, several constituencies hold political importance, however, one constituency in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh has become the centre of attraction for various reasons. Congress and Jai Adivasi Yuva Shakti (JAYS), a new political outfit, which are currently involved in alliance talks for Malwa region, are in loggerheads with each other over the tribal-dominated seat, Kukshi.

Kukshi constituency mainly comprises of the tribal population including 72% schedule tribe and 5% scheduled caste of the total population of 3.2 Lakh.

Following which, JAYS founder Dr Hiralal Alawa, who belongs to a reserved caste has preferred to contest the upcoming election from Kukshi.

Importance of Kukshi

JAYS founder Dr Hiralal Alawa told media, “Our seat-sharing talks with the Congress are underway. We want to contest the upcoming election from 40 assembly constituencies. Fighting from Kukshi due to our strong presence there is top on our agenda.”

Congress party has been triumphing Kukshi constituency since 1972, apart from getting defeated only twice- in 1990 assembly elections and 2012 by-poll. Surendra Singh Baghel, sitting MLA of Congress from Kukshi has also shown his ambition to fight from the tribal-dominated seat. Baghel, who is considered as a close aide of former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh, stated “I am all set to contest the upcoming polls from this seat”, and expressed confidence that he would win Kukshi with a massive margin.

The Madhya Pradesh Congress is willing to join hands with the JAYS in western Madhya Pradesh along with Malwa region, which covers 66 assembly seats of total 230 seats. Currently in the Malwa region, Congress does not have a big presence, apart from Kukshi constituency and conversely, JAYS is emerging as a pro-tribal political outfit.  Congress has only 9 MLAs and BJP has 56 legislators.

After getting a setback from Bahujan Samaj Party (BJP) and Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress is leaving no stone unturned for forming the alliance with JAYS and Vyapam whistleblower, Dr Anand Rai is playing the crucial role in the whole activity.
