The Full Moon Day is referred as Purnima in the traditional Hindu calendar. And the Purnima Tithi of the Magha month is referred to as Magha Purnima. Therefore, the Full Moon day is of great significance because it is believed to be a great day for organising the Satyanarayan Puja or the puja of the Ishta Devta.

Moreover, on this day, people observe a vrat (fast) and break it only after sighting the Moon. Magha concurs with Gregorian January/February.

Magha Purnima 2021 Significance

Magha is hailed as one of the most prominent months in the Hindu calendar. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as well as Lord Shiva. And more importantly, this year, the Magh Purnima will concur with the Kumbh Mela festivities. Though the Shahi Snan will take place from Maha Shivaratri day, devotees shall take a dip in the holy Ganga and other sacred rivers on the Purnima Tithi.

Magha Purnima also marks the conclusion of the Magha month in North India. Therefore, the full moon day of this month is greatly celebrated by Hindu devotees especially the worshippers of Lord Vishnu.

On this day, a number of bathing rituals take place on the banks of holy rivers like Ganga, Jamuna, Kaveri, Krishna, Tapti, etc. People walk for miles and miles to be able to take a single holy dip in the river. A dip in the sea at Kanyakumari and Rameshwaram also has high religious value.

The day also constituted a special significance in Buddhism, as It is believed that Gautam Buddha announced his impending death on this day. There are religious ceremonies organised at Viharas, prayers are dedicated to the Buddha. Religious flags are hoisted on all the monasteries at dawn and sacred verses are chanted from the Tripitaka.

This year, Magh Purnima Vrat will be observed on February 27.

Magh Purnima 2021 Tithi timings

The Purnima Tithi begins at 3:49 PM on February 26 and ends at 1:46 PM on February 27. Therefore, the vrat must be observed on February 26.
