Mahalaya Amavasya 2020: As per the latest reports, this year devotees will not be allowed to dip themselves in the Ganga river on the occasion of Mahalaya Amavasya tomorrow that is September 17 because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The district administration announced the same on Wednesday. On this day, people also pay respect to family members who are not alive.

It should be noted that Narayan Shila temple will also remain close and authorities have asked to seal Har ki Pauri from today evening. Every year lakhs of devotees take a holy dip at the Ganga on the occasion of festivals. However, it will not possible this year.

Significance of Sarv Pitru Amavasya

Mahalaya Amavasya is also known as Sarv Pitru Amavasya, it will be celebrated tomorrow. The Amavasya Tithi will start at 7.56 pm today and will go on till 4.29 pm tomorrow. This festival marks the culmination of the Pitru Paksha period and Devi Paksha’s beginning.

Mahalaya Amavasya also marks the beginning of the Sharadiya Navratri season which is connected to Maa Durga. In this, people fast for 9 days and worship 9 forms of Durga. On this day, the Goddess visits earth from the heavenly Kailash.
