Maharashtra: 32 year old farmer kills self on the same day his son recites poem on suicide

Malhari Batule, 32-year-old farmer belonging to the Pathardi taluka of Ahmednagar district committed suicide by drinking poison on Thursday night. In the morning on the same day Batule’s son — a Class III student at a government school — had recited a short poem on the topic of farmers’ suicide on the occasion of Marathi Bhasa Day.

The young boy on his poem talked about the need for farmers to desist from taking such a harsh step, as it serves no purpose.

According to TOI, Pathardi police sources said Batule was taken directly to a hospital in Ahmednagar city for treatment, but he later succumbed to his state. At present, the police have gotten cases on accidental death.

“It seems like Loan stress could be the reason for the farmer to end his life. He had a substantial amount of loan to repay,” the police sources said.

Police insiders talked about How the farmer had taken a loan of more than Rs 20 lakh and bought a truck.

Moreover, it was also his responsibility to repay a loan of Rs 8 lakh that his father had taken to buy a tractor.

“The initial formulation of the information state, the farmer was facing a financial crisis. He was finding it difficult to repay two loan instalments,” as per the findings of the police.
