The ninth edition of the Malvan Open Sea Swimming Competition was held recently at Chivla Beach in Maharashtra but what special about this year’s event is that for the first in India, over 50 children with autism took part in the competition.

It was for the first time in India that a deep sea swimming competition was organised for children with disabilities. The 51 children who came from Pune, Nashik, Mumbai and Thane competed under the special category and swam 1 km in the deep sea.

All the participants suffered from a range of condition like Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Williams Syndrome. However, there were no losers, all the 51 competitors were winners. They proudly displayed their medals as their parents looked on, some of them even with tears of joy rolling down their eyes.

While speaking with a web publication, Sagar Shanbhag, one of the organisers and a swimming coach said the event was aimed at providing an opportunity to the children with disabilities to develop their skills and better integrate into the society.
