The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on former Amaravati Police Commissioner and current Nagpur Commissioner Amitesh Kumar for calling a woman to a police station late in the night to interrogate. Notably, the Supreme Court has ordered that no woman should be called to a police station after the sunset.

After the arrest of Kanchanmala Gawande’s husband in a case on March 21, 2011, Amravati police summoned Kanchanmala and her two daughters to the police station and kept them in the police station till late at night and threatened them.

In this case, Kanchanmala Gavande has filed a complaint against the then Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar (current Commissioner of Police Nagpur) and Inspector Shivji in the State Human Rights Commission. Now, the State Human Rights Commission has fined Rs 1 lakh on the police.

Kanchanmala said, “I waited for about eleven years and now I have got justice. I was ready to cooperate with the police about my husband but that people weren’t ready to let me go. I waited with my daughters until late at night. Was it okay?” Kanchanmala Gavde received a cheque of one lakh from the Amravati police commissioner.
