A man was sentenced to 10 years in jail for possessing 18kg of the drug hashish, or hash, a concentrated form of marijuana.  The Delhi-based man was detained in 2011 for carrying the drug into the city. He was planning to sell it, said police.

Now, the Thane court has sentenced Amit Brijmohan, 33. He is a resident of Nand Nagri in New Delhi. Along with 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, Amit was also fined Rs1 lakh under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

In 2011, Amit and two others were detained from the Kashimira bus stand in Bhayander carrying hash. They had brought the drug to re-sell it in Mumbai.

According to District judge Hemant Patwardhan, the evidence brought before the court was consistent, reliable and sufficient to verify that Amit was guilty, beyond reasonable doubt. “I therefore, do not hesitate to record my findings against point in affirmative,” he said.

However, the judge accepted Amit’s appeal to be moved to a Delhi jail as his family resides there.

“The jailer is directed to consider the transfer of the convict to Central Jail at Delhi, if the rules in respect thereof permit,” the court said.
