Smelling dirty socks could end you up in a hospital. At least that is what has happened to a Chinese man.
A bizarre habit of smelling stinky socks led a man to a severe fungal infection.
Peng, was admitted to the Zhangzhou hospital of Fujian(China) after he started coughing badly and feeling extreme pain in his chest.
According to the reports, Peng apparently had an addiction of smelling his socks post wearing them the whole day. After every day at work, the man would come home and sniff his used socks. The addiction resulted in him getting hospitalized.
According to a senior doctor, Mai Zhuanying, “The infection could also be attributed to the patient’s lack of rest at home as he had been looking after his child, which lead to a weaker immune system.”
Peng caught infection which had started to develop on his feet. As a result of constantly smelling the sweaty socks, the fungal spores entered his lung system.
The habit might have been begun while he was looking for a way to calm his nerves after a hectic day at work, said the medical experts.
It is uncommon for fungal infections to reach the lungs when compared to viral or bacterial infections but they do pose a significant difficulty in diagnosis, according to the American Thoracic Society.
