Maoist leader CP Jaleel killed in an encounter with Kerala police

Maoist leader CP Jaleel was killed in an encounter with the Kerala Police’s Thunderbolt unit on Thursday near Upavan Resort at Lakkidi in Wayanad district of the state.

As per the reports, Senior Officer Balram Kumar Upadhyaya told the media that CP Jaleel, who was part of a four member group of the banned outfit, had come to the resort late on Wednesday to ask for food and money,

The resort authorities instantly alerted the police following which the Thunderbolt team – especially formed to tackle the Maoists – was immediately despatched for the resort.

A gun battle started at about 8 PM and continued till early on Thursday. The Maoists opened fire triggering the encounter.

We have recovered the body of a Maoist near the site of the encounter. Another man has been seriously injured while three managed to escape. We are still confirming his identity. Inquest proceedings are going on. Around eight members of the Maoist gang were involved in the gunfight, ” a top police officer.

Till the time inquest is underway, the resort has been cordoned off.
