It is often seen that girls are forced to take up household chores, get married early, and moreover quit education. Setting an example, Meerut girl Sanju Rani Verma (then 28-years-old) fled from her home to avoid marriage.

According to a report in Times of India, Sanju was told to quit her studies and get married after her mother passed away due to critical health in 2013. By then, she had completed her graduation from Meerut’s RG Degree College and the 28-year-old was pursuing her masters from Delhi University.

Sanju had to choose between what her family wanted and what she wanted. Later, she decided to chase her dreams and now has no regrets.

Seven years later, her name was among the list of candidates who had cracked the prestigious state Public Service Commission (PSC) exam. She cleared the UPPSC-2018 exam, the result of which was declared last week.

Speaking to Times of India, she said, “That year (in 2013) I not only left home, but also the PG course which I was pursuing from DU. There was no money. I took a room on rent and started teaching children. I also got part-time teaching jobs at private schools.  Somehow I continued my studies for civil services exams.”

“I was expecting the post of sub-divisional magistrate. My final aim is to crack the civil services exam and become a district magistraite”, she added.

Recalling her decision to leave her home, Sanju said, “My mother had passed away just a few days ago and my family started building up pressure to get me married. I tried to explain my point but all in vain. It was then that I decided that they cannot see the things from my perspective and I would rather live on my own because I was not ready to settle for anything else.”

After fleeing from her home, Sanju took coaching from Meerut and her teacher Abhishek Sharma has played a prominent role in her success.

When asked about the family, Sanju revealed that her family started disliking her as she decided to lead her life on her terms. She hopes that her family will be happy to see her getting respect as an officer.

Sanju Rani Verma’s story can inspire several girls and their families out there.
