Kerala Transgender LGBT India Woman Dr. Priya VS

Dr. Priya VS is Kerala’s first transwoman doctor who had her own struggle while growing up, which she had to fight against. Priya had suffered a lot from the complexness of her gender identity. She is now an Ayurvedic doctor and was earlier known as Jinu.

Priya graduated from Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College in 2008 and completed her post-graduation in 2012 from KVG Ayurveda Medical College, Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka. She started off her medical career at Sitaram Ayurveda Hospital in Thrissur.

Priya was in Class V at S N Public School in Kollam when her parents read her mind from the scribbles she had made on the back of a notebook. “It was time I started getting hints of my gender identity and my complex state of mind”, she says, “My parents were gobsmacked by their discovery, minced no words in expressing their agony and distress,” says Priya in an interview given to Onmanorama.

Struggle with Gender Identity

Priya has sensed her true gender identity very early but due to social stigma and objection from the family she had to endure the struggle with herself until post-graduation.

Priya was clueless as to where she was going in life and even contemplated suicide. “I was wrecked by a state of mind that only I could understand,” says Priya. “However, I didn’t give up. I decided to come out and trumpet the truth to the whole world. But that was not as easy as one would think”, Priya recalls.

“My parents thought that I was having some mental problems and I was even taken to a psychiatrist,” she recalls, “the doctor after medical examination ruled out any mental problem with me.”

Her parents after that ask her to behave like a boy and Priya continued to hide her real gender identity and feelings.

But only she knew that she couldn’t be anyone other than a woman. After she started working at Sitaram Ayurveda Hospital in Thrissur, Priya decided to fully accept her gender identity as a woman. “After years of pondering and speculation I decided once and for all that I would assume the real me inside,” she says in an interview given to Padmakumar K.

She then decided to go through a sex rearrangement surgery which her mother and then the whole family supported wholeheartedly.

In 2018 Priya started the hormone treatment at Renai Medicity in Kochi and in 2020 she underwent sex rearrangement surgery under doctor couple Dr. Arjun Ashokan and Suja P Sukumar.

Priya has thus become the first transgender doctor in Kerala.
