Migrant exodus amidst coronavirus pandemic, 50,000 daily wage workers cross Gujarat border

On Sunday afternoon, according to some media reports, Sonu and his friends passed Zundal crossroads. From the outskirts of Ahmedabad, they set out for Lucknow on foot as the lockdown has brought their lives to a grinding halt.

As far as an estimate is concerned, 50,000 migrant workers have already crossed the Rajasthan border from Gujarat, most of them on foot while few thousand are en route to their homes in Saurashtra region from Surat.

Mostly tribals from MP, workers have taken to the road despite state’s efforts to contain the exodus.

The union govt took a decision of an impending 14-day lockdown to contain coronavirus pandemic spread. But from 28th March, we see many migrant workers flocking in Delhi bus stations wanting to go back to their homes amidst coronavirus lockdown. The migrants fear that they might fail to manage subsistence living,
