A 65-year-old moneylender was strangled to death while he was sleeping near a tube well in a village in this district, police said on Thursday.

The body of Mahavir Singh, resident of Surjawali, was found lying on a cot on Thursday morning, Superintendent of Police (City) Surendra Nath Tiwari said.

Quoting the family members and villagers, the SP said Mahavir used to give money to the people on interest. They have expressed apprehension that Mahavir was murdered by someone who had taken money from him.

Mahavir used to keep account of all his transactions in a diary including details of those who had taken money from him and it (diary) is missing.

SP Tiwari said the matter is being probed and legal proceedings are underway.
