Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill 2019: Know fines on various traffic violations

Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, July 31 passed the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019. The Bill aims to enforce stricter penalties for road traffic violations.

It was earlier passed in the 16th Lok Sabha but lapsed after it failed the Rajya Sabha test.

Here we list proposed fines on various traffic violations.

Jumping traffic light or using mobile phone: Penalty of Rs 5,000 and jail term of upto one year.

Travel without a ticket will cost you a fine of Rs 500.

Unauthorized use of vehicles without a licence will attract penalty of Rs 5,000.

Driving without a licence will cost you Rs 5,000.

Driving despite disqualification will cost violators Rs 10,000.

Those who over speed will be fined Rs 1,000 for LMV, Rs 2,000 for Medium passenger vehicles.

Driving dangerously will cost offenders up to Rs 5,000.

Drunken driving may cost you a fine of up to Rs 10,000.

If someone is caught without seatbelt, they’ll have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000.

Riders without helmet will have to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. Licence may be disqualified for three months.

Some new provisions proposed in the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2019:

Bill proposes Rs 10,000 fine for not giving way to emergency vehicles.

Guardian/owner shall be deemed to be guilty of offences by juveniles.  Guardian will have to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 and may face three-year imprisonment. Juvenile will be tried under the Juvenile Justice Act.
