Mumbai Metro stops use of single-use plastics

Mumbai, Oct 3 (IANS) The Reliance Infrastructure-promoted Mumbai Metro One (MMOPL) announced on Thursday that it had stopped using all single-use plastics from October 2, Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.

MMOPL said it had communicated to all kiosks and retail outlets at all the 12 stations about the ban and suggested alternatives, like paper cups, cloth or paper bags to them.

The banned items included less than 200 mm PETE bottles, plastic mineral water pouches, bags with or without handle, single-use disposable crockery, straws made either of plastics or thermocol and decoration items, said a MMOPL spokesperson.

“MMOPL is devoted to green promise and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and comply with such environment-friendly initiatives. It will be our endeavour that all kiosks at the Metro stations comply, and our commuters cooperate with the new regulation,” the spokesperson said.
