The Mumbai Police on Thursday have busted a ‘false TRP racket’, where households were asked to keep channels switched on the entire day. The officers claimed that even in uneducated homes, some English news channels remained switched on.

Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh said that two people have been arrested in the matter and officers are searching locations of their associates.

“Two people were arrested, produced in court and the Mumbai Police have got their custody. One accused has been arrested with Rs 20 lakhs while Rs 8.5 lakhs has been found in a bank locker”, Commissioner Param Bir Singh said.

BARC has submitted that Republic TV is a suspect in TRP manipulation, the Mumbai Police Commissioner said. Police received the data of these households from BARC, the rating agency. We suspect that if this was happening in Mumbai then it could be happening in other parts of the country as well, he added.

One of the arrested accused person and some of the wanted accused persons were employees of Hansa Research Group Pvt Ltd and they have misused the confidential data which had been entrusted to them.

The development comes days after cops said that 80,000 fake social media accounts were set-up to defame the Maharashtra government, its ministers, and Mumbai police in the days following Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
