Muzaffarnagar ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ live updates:

Farmers’ organisations announce Bharat Bandh on September 27

BJP MP Varun Gandhi on Sunday called for adopting a conciliatory line with farmers protesting against the Centre’s three farm laws. His appeal came as a large number of farmers from across the country converged in Muzaffarnagar to attend a ‘kisan mahapanchayat’ to decide on the plan of action on the agitation against the farm laws.

Varun Gandhi tweeted, “Lakhs of farmers have gathered in protest today, in Muzaffarnagar. They are our own flesh and blood. We need to start re-engaging with them in a respectful manner: understand their pain, their point of view and work with them in reaching common ground.”

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is a Congress general secretary, announced her support for the farmers’ mahapanchayat. Priyanka Gandhi tweeted, “Farmers are the voice of this country. Farmers are the pride of the country. There is no arrogance of any power in front of the farmers’ voice. The whole country is with the farmers in the fight to save agriculture and demand the right to their hard work.”

Thousands of Indian farmers have begun their ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ at the GIC ground in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar on Sunday.

According to the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is leading the movement, said that farmers from at least 15 states will be attending Sunday’s Mahapanchayat.

It has been more than 9 months since farmers started their protest against three new laws passed by Parliament in September last year, concerning the farm sector. They have braved winter cold, summer heat, rains, and second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The SKM, umbrella body of 40 farmer unions, said that the ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ will prove that the agitation has the support of “all castes, religions, states, classes, small traders and all sections of the society”.

“The Muzaffarnagar ‘mahapanchayat’ will be the biggest ever in the last nine months,” the SKM said in a statement.

“The mahapanchayat of September 5 will make the Yogi-Modi governments realise the power of farmers, farm labourers, and supporters of the farm movement. The Muzaffarnagar mahapanchayat will be the biggest ever in the last nine months,” the SKM had said in a statement.

It had said 100 medical camps had also been set up for the farmers attending the mahapanchayat.

A total of 32 farmer unions from Punjab have given a deadline of September 8 to the state government to withdraw cases against protestors, it said, adding that if the cases are not withdrawn, the farmers will prepare a roadmap for a bigger protest on September 8.

The farmers’ protest against the three contentious laws have completed over nine months since they first arrived at the Delhi borders. The farmers have been demanding the repeal of the laws which they are afraid will do away with the MSP system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporations.
