According to conventional belief, the name derives from the La Manche place name Brix. However, it is argued that there is insufficient evidence to support this and that the name is derived from the municipality of Le Brus in Calvados. Since the 1800s, it has been used as a given name in the English-speaking world, reaching its zenith in the 1940s and 1950s.
