National Cancer Thriver Day 2023 (US): Facts, Dates and History

National Cancer Thriver Day 2023 is observed annually on the second Sunday of June. This year’s event occurs on June 11. Cancer survival is a significant victory in and of itself. After beating cancer, however, individuals do not merely survive; they flourish! Although cancer can have a significant impact on people’s lives and disrupt numerous aspects, many patients are able to recover through pure determination. Additionally, the day honours and supports those who are flourishing despite having the disease.

The background of National Cancer Survivor Day

Connect4Cancer, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit cancer advocacy organisation, founded the day. The organisation seeks not only to assist cancer survivors but also to encourage them to thrive! Connect4Cancer has been assisting cancer patients and their families in the United States, where there are presently 22 million cancer survivors, for nine years. National Cancer Survivor Month is observed in June, and the first Sunday of the month is National Cancer Survivors Day. Therefore, it makes sense to observe National Cancer Survivor Day on the second Sunday of June.

The earliest evidence of cancer was discovered in the fossilised bone tumours of Ancient Egyptian corpses, as well as in ancient manuscripts. In addition, cancer of the head and neck has been associated with deterioration of the cranial bones.

Even though the term cancer was not used, the earliest description of the disease dates back to around 3000 B.C. in Egypt. The Greek physician Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine,” who lived from 460 B.C. to 370 B.C., coined the term cancer. He utilised the terms ‘carcinos’ and ‘carcinoma’ to refer to non-ulcer forming and ulcer forming tumours.

Beginning in the 1400s, scientists gained a deeper understanding of the workings of the human body and the disease processes. Rudolf Virchow, also known as the founder of cellular pathology, established the premise for pathologic study of cancers under microscopes and established the correlation between microscopic pathology and disease.
