National Day of China 2023 History, Activities, FAQs and Dates

National Day of China 2023: National Day of China is annually observed on October 1 in China. It is a three-day commemoration of a three-day public holiday. Since most people receive holidays in the midst of the week, the National Day of China Week is also known as “Golden Week.” It is also China’s second-largest holiday season. The decision to designate weekdays as holidays was made to promote domestic tourism and enable families to travel long distances to visit one another. However, the holiday can also be observed without visiting family.

HISTORY OF CHINESE NATIONAL DAY

Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed the establishment of the People’s Republic of China from the Tiananmen Gate on October 1, 1949. This was hailed as the end of a bloody civil conflict between Mao’s Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese government. In December 1949, the Chinese government enacted a resolution on the National Day of the People’s Republic of China, making October 1 the National Day of China.

From 1950 to 1959, massive rallies were conducted to commemorate this national holiday. In 1960, the Communist Party and the State Council decided to adhere to communist principles by simplifying and personalizing celebrations. From 1960 to 1970, Tiananmen Square continued to host mass rallies, but military parades were discontinued. Between 1971 and 1983, visiting parks and other galas replaced mass rallies and military maneuvers. Rarely have grand celebrations been conducted since then. However, 1984 and 1999 were exceptions to commemorate the 35th and 50th anniversaries of the party’s establishment, respectively.

Since 2019, the State Council has published a “National Day Honors List” to recognize Chinese citizens who have contributed to charitable actions, economic development, sports, diplomacy, and the promotion of Chinese culture and the arts. They are awarded national medals and titles of honor. A few days before the National Day of China, the President and General Secretary present the medals and titles during an award ceremony.
