The date of this event varies by country, depending on the commemorative event. In the United States, March 30 is designated National Doctor’s Day, the first day when general anaesthesia is used in surgery.

National Doctors’ Day History and Significance

In March 1933, Georgia celebrated National Doctor’s Day for the first time. Dr. Charles B. Almond’s wife, Eudora Brown Almond, decided to set aside a day to commemorate the physician. For the first celebration, a greeting card was sent and flowers were laid on the grave of the deceased doctor. In 1958, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. Legislation subsequently established National Doctors Day. Approved by the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, President George Bush designated March 30 as “National Doctor’s Day.”
