National Herbs and Spices Day

National Egg Roll Day occurs annually on June 10. This deep-fried appetiser is available with brown, white, free-range, and organic eggs. Although comparable to Chinese spring rolls, the egg roll’s filling is wrapped in a crispy, thick, egg-dipped pastry, making the cabbage, meat, and other filling ingredients especially delicious! Due to their Asian roots, egg rolls have made their way into every Vietnamese and Chinese-American restaurant and, consequently, into the hearts of every American.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL EGG ROLL DAY

National Egg Roll Day is a relatively recent food holiday, established in 2019 in honour of the proprietors of Van’s Kitchen, Van and Kim Nguyen. The opening of the Vietnamese-themed restaurant in Dallas, Texas in 1986 marked the commencement of the family’s pursuit of the ‘American dream’. Van and Kim, like many other immigrant families, came from Vietnam with a passion for sharing their culture through food, especially their authentic egg rolls, which are filled with shredded cabbage, minced meat (usually pork), bamboo shoots, and a variety of other freshly ground spices. Utilising only the freshest ingredients, they endeavour to maintain the quality of their egg rolls.

Although the origins of the dish are uncertain, it may have originated in the Cantonese cuisine of southern China. However, many Asian nations also claim to have their own unique versions of the humble egg roll. According to Andrew Coe, author of “Chop Suey: A Cultural History of Chinese Food in the United States,” the modern egg roll was devised in the 1930s in New York. Compared to the ancient Southern Chinese traditional rolls, Americans have been eating egg-roll-like foods since the middle of the nineteenth century.

The distinctive recipe for American-style egg rolls was first published in 1938 by chef Henry Low, one of the two chefs vying for credit for the dish’s popularity. Despite its brief history, the typical egg roll we consume today remains crunchy, soft and savoury, and the mere notion of it makes us drool and seek out the nearest takeaway menu.
