National Film Awards 2019: From Punjabi film ‘Harjeeta’ to Urdu film ‘Hamid’, check list of regional movie winners

Awards were given in 31 categories in feature film category while non-feature films will be announced in 23 categories.

The National Film Awards which is India’s most prominent awards ceremony celebrating the best in Indian cinema was announced on Friday, August 9. The announcement of the 66th National Film Awards were held at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi.

Earlier today, the jury members submitted their report to Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar with their final recommendations in various categories. Awards were given in 31 categories in feature film category while non-feature films will be announced in 23 categories.

The awards were announced by jury head Rahul Rawail. There is no clarity on when the awards will be presented

Every year, the awards are announced in April and the ceremony is held on May 3. But this year, the awards were postponed in the wake of the general elections.

Here’s the complete list of regional movie winners

Best Rajasthani Film: Turtle

This film Turtle directed by Dinesh S Yadav and produced by Ashok Chaudhary, revolves around the problem of water in a village in Rajasthan.

Best Hindi Film: Andhadhun

Andhadhun is a 2018 Indian crime thriller film that was co-written and directed by Sriram Raghavan. The film revolves around a blind pianist (played by Ayushmann Khurrana) who must report a murder that he witnessed.

Best Assamese Film: Bulbul Can Sing

The Assamese film, which was released in 2018, revolves around three teenagers who struggle to come to terms with their sexual identities. The movie has been directed by Rima Das.

Best Punjabi Film: Harjeeta

Harjeeta is a hockey based Punjabi drama film. The film has been directed by Vijay Kumar Arora, starring Ammy Virk and Pankaj Tripathi. Raised in a poor, dysfunctional home, a young man Harjeet Singh (Ammy Virk) dreams of winning the World Cup in field hockey

Best Bengali Film: Ek Je Chhilo Raja

Ek Je Chhilo Raja is an Indian Bengali drama film directed by Srijit Mukherji. The movie is based on the Bhawal case, an extended Indian court case about a possible impostor who claimed to be the prince of Bhawal, who was presumed dead a decade earlier.

Best Garo Film: Ma.Ama

Dominic Megam Sangma’s 123-minute Garo film, Ma.Ama is a deeply personal true story of how Sangma lost his mother because to a black magic ritual when he was only two-and-a-half.

Best Urdu Film: Hamid

Hamid is an Indian drama film directed by Aijaz Khan. The film stars Rasika Dugal, Vikas Kumar and Talha Arshad Reshi in major roles. The story is about an eight year-old Hamid who learns that 786 is God’s number and decides to try and reach out to God, by dialing this number. He wants to talk to his father, who his mother tells him has gone to Allah. One fine day the phone call is answered, and two lives shattered in the strife of Kashmir find a way to be complete again.

Best Telugu Film: Mahanati

Mahanti is a 2018 Indian bilingual biographical film written and directed by Nag Ashwin. The film stars Keerthy Suresh, Dulquer Salmaan, Samantha Akkineni and Vijay Devarakonda. It follows the life of Indian actress Savitri (Keerthy), depicting her turbulent rise to prominence, marriage with Gemini Ganesan (Salmaan), and subsequent fall from grace, viewed from the perspective of a journalist (Samantha Akkineni) and a photographer (Vijay Deverakonda)

Best Marati Film: Bhonga

Bhonga is a movie directed by Shivaji Lotan Patil featuring Amol Kagne, Kapil Kamble Gudsurkar.
