National German Chocolate Cake Day 2023 (US): Facts, Dates and History

On June 11, National German Chocolate Cake Day, we know you’re either rushing to the kitchen or the store to grab a slice of German chocolate cake. The traditionally chocolate cake has layers of rich chocolate covered in a sweet and nutty pecan buttercream, but it is not German! Sam German, an Anglo-American who created a specific culinary chocolate for the Baker’s Chocolate Company, gave the cake its name.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY

German chocolate cake — the fudgy, nutty, and incredibly sweet confection we all believed to be German! Rich layers of chocolate cake are held together with a coconut-pecan frosting and are frequently crowned with maraschino cherries. While many Americans believe German chocolate originates in Germany, it would be difficult to locate a German who is familiar with it.

In 1852, Sam German, an Anglo-American chocolatier for The Baker’s Chocolate Company, created his signature dark baking chocolate. Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate was dubbed “Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate” in his honour by Baker’s Chocolate Company. This explains the origin misnomer and sets the stage for the culinary creation of German chocolate cake.

In 1957, roughly a century later, the German chocolate cake was first created. Mrs. George Clay, a homemaker in Dallas, Texas, submitted her cake recipe to be featured as ‘Recipe of the Day’ on “The Dallas Morning News.” She dubbed it “German’s Chocolate Cake” due to the type of baking chocolate she employed. However, the’s’ has been omitted from the recipe over time.

Unsurprisingly, the recipe spread rapidly, primarily through word of mouth. According to reports, Baker’s Chocolate sales increased by 73% in one year as producers made more German chocolate cake. General Foods, the owner of the Baker’s trademark, began distributing the cake recipe to bakeries across the nation. Numerous bakeries continue to produce the decadent delicacy today.
