National Hydroxyapatite Day 2023

National Hydroxyapatite Day is observed every year on May 29. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of the substance’s applications in the dental industry and to promote innovation in science across the nation.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL HYDROXYAPATITE DAY

Hydroxyapatite is a naturally occurring calcium apatite mineral. The substance crystallises in the hexagonal crystal system. The hydroxyapatite material is white. However, apatites that occur in nature can be brown, yellow, or green. Bone mineral, a modified form of hydroxyapatite, comprises up to fifty percent of the volume and seventy percent of the mass of human bone. Tooth enamel and dentin are primarily composed of carbonated, calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite. Crystals of hydroxyapatite are found in minute calcifications, the pineal gland, and other structures.

In 2019, hydroxyapatite (or its synthesised form, nano-hydroxyapatite) is not extensively utilised. According to a number of studies, it can assist with dentine hypersensitivity, sensitivity after teeth bleaching, and caries prevention. Teeth-whitening agents generate reactive oxygen species, which erode the enamel. To prevent this, add nano-hydroxyapatite to the bleaching solution to reduce the bleaching agent’s impact on the enamel by blocking pores. Following the bleaching process, this reduces sensitivity.

Nano-hydroxyapatite protects teeth from caries by remineralizing them. In the event of an acid attack by cariogenic bacteria, nano-hydroxyapatite particles can permeate the tooth’s surface pores to form a protective layer. In addition, nano-hydroxyapatite may be able to repair caries damage by directly replacing damaged surface minerals or functioning as a binder for lost ions. In the future, nano-hydroxyapatite may be utilised for tissue engineering and repair.
