National Read a Book Day 2023: HISTORY

National Read a Book Day is believed to have originated in the United States, but its other origins are unknown. What is evident, however, is the Americans’ love of literature! And for many, this is a welcome day because 81% of us believe we do not spend enough time reading. So, today is the ideal day to set aside some time to catch up on our “to-read” list.

The prevalence of book societies demonstrates our enduring fondness for reading. Women’s Bible studies can be traced back to the 1600s. In the last few decades, however, reading has taken on a much more social dimension, largely due to Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club. Beginning in 1996, Oprah’s Book Club recommended 70 books that contributed to over $55 million in sales and inspired millions of people to read.

In the past 12 months, over 74% of Americans have read at least one book. Sure, the busyness of life undoubtedly gets in the way of our reading pursuits with many other activities competing for our time. Thankfully, electronic platforms have made mobile reading simpler. Approximately 20% of books are now ingested via electronic platforms. Grab or download the book on top of your collection, regardless of the format you prefer, and dive in!

National Read a Book Day 2023: ACTIVITIES

Of course, this is the purpose of the day, but you can add some enjoyment to reading by participating in a reading challenge. If you Google “reading challenge” images, you’ll find dozens of criteria and suggestions for selecting books that will challenge your imagination while also being impossible to put down.

There is a good chance that your local public library is always in need of volunteers. Providing a secure, quiet space for children to study is a significant contribution libraries make to their communities. In libraries, community meetings are conducted, and many serve as polling places during elections. Donating books to your local library is a wonderful method to share your knowledge with the community, and book donations frequently assist libraries in stocking their shelves.

Share your enthusiasm for literature with others. Read sequentially to your children and instill in them a love of literature. You could also volunteer to read to a senior who cannot read independently. Reading aloud to them not only improves your brain function and reduces your stress level, but also establishes a bond they will cherish and stimulates their brain activity.
