National Rocky Road Day 2023: On June 2nd, Americans celebrate Rocky Road with tremendous enthusiasm in honour of National Rocky Road Day. The flavour that made this ice cream and dessert famous is being celebrated today. Surprisingly, this flavour is exported to markets far outside the United States and Australia, including China, Japan, South Africa, and many more.
National Rocky Road Day 2023: History
Australians invented the rocky road treat in 1853. Due to the lengthy voyage from Europe, many of these sweets went bad, but enterprising individuals combined them with locally available nuts in ingenious ways to extend their shelf life. In addition, they fortified them with low-quality chocolate and attempted a recovery rather than disposal. That was a very clever idea.
The term was given to the treacherous path that visitors used to reach the gold mines. The moniker “pothole desert” lingered because the landscape resembled a rough road littered with boulders.
Later on in history, this sweet was frozen into rocky road ice cream. William Dreyer of Oakland is credited with its invention in 1929. He recreated the traditional dish as an ice cream using the same ingredients. It was made to cheer up individuals who had suffered greatly from the Great Depression that followed the 1929 Wall Street Crash. The goal of the ice cream’s naming was to spread joy. ‘Share a scoop, share a grin’ was the slogan used to promote this dessert at the time.
The rocky road ice cream, according to George Farren, was invented by him as well. He allegedly did nothing more than throw a candy bar and some chocolate ice cream into a mixer and turn up a delicious dessert.
