National Title Track Day 2023

National Title Track Day is observed annually on the fourth Friday of May, which falls on May 26 this year. It is the day when we recollect our favourite album and film title tracks. But what is the song’s title? Simply stated, it is a song that shares the name of the album or film to which it belongs. ‘Let It Be’ by The Beatles and ‘Back In Black’ by AC/DC are two examples. Who can forget the film “Ghostbusters”? Some, like “Black Sabbath” or “In the Court of the Crimson King” by King Crimson, even bear the artist’s name.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL TITLE TRACK DAY

Due to a lack of information, we do not know what the first title track in history was. But on December 22, 2017, University of Alberta professor André Costopoulos decided to review on his blog all of the albums that reached number one on the Billboard 200 between 1966 and 1990, as reported by billboard.com, as well as the top 10 albums for each of those years, as reported by besteveralbums.com.

He determined the percentage of albums with title tracks on the “Billboard” and “Best Ever Albums” lists for each year, as well as the number of weeks an album with a title track topped the Billboard 200. The fact that only 39 out of 471 albums (8%) appeared on both listings demonstrates that early financial success and long-term viability are largely distinct characteristics. There may have been pressure to include a title track on commercially successful albums, he argued.

Additionally, the overall frequency of title tracks increased during successful title track album years as well as the following year, whereas the frequency of title tracks decreased during unsuccessful title track album years for that year and the following year. Also, he observed that the number of title tracks appeared to increase after the release of The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be,’ George Harrison’s ‘All Things Must Pass,’ and John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ in 1970 and 1971.
