National Veggie Burger Day 2023: History

Vegetarianism can be traced back to ancient Egypt, but lost ground as the popularity of meat consumption grew in many parts of the world. Hippies were known for adopting vegetarian lifestyles.

Greg and his brother Craig Sams were first exposed to vegetarianism when their dad gave up meat for the New Year. In an interview, Gregory explained that he gave up meat when he was 10 years old and hasn’t looked back since. When he launched his restaurant in Paddington, London, at age 19, he was the first to serve meatless burgers. Later, the Sams brothers went into business together, but they ran into financial difficulties when they tried to start a new restaurant. They devised a scheme to launch an entirely meat-free burger into the mainstream market. ‘Vege’ (now more commonly spelled’veggie’) was itself an emerging concept when the ‘VegeBurger’ was originally released. This was the first completely vegetarian burger to hit the market, while veggie burgers had been around for a while. After a successful prelaunch, this burger is now available at supermarkets like Sainsbury’s and Safeway.

In recent years, meatless burgers like Impossible Burgers and Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burger Patty have become increasingly popular. The vegetarian food firm Amy’s Kitchen created National Veggie Burger Day to raise awareness about the benefits of veggie burgers and encourage more people to try them.
