On Monday night, Navy officials confirmed that the force’s senior-most submariner, Vice-admiral Srikant has passed away due to complications that were triggered by COVID-19. This sad development came as a setback for everyone in the Navy and to the Vice Admiral’s family and friends.
Notably, Vice Admiral Srikant was director-general of Project Seabird. He breathed his last in New Delhi.
Navy officials confirmed that the officer earlier held appointments of Inspector General Nuclear Safety and Commandant of National Defence College.
COVID-19 recovery rate now better
Currently, India has over 99.06 lakh Covid cases with a total death account of 1,43,709. Out of this 94.22 lakh, people have successfully recovered since the beginning of the pandemic according to official government data. Notably, India is the second worst Covid hit country after the United States Of America.
The number of active cases stands at 3,39,820 according to the data from the Union Health Ministry. Maharashtra, India’s worst COVID-19-affected state has 18.83 lakh as total infected people. The fatality count here is 48,269.
Maharashtra is followed by four southern states in terms of the Covid case count – Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
Global coronavirus infections have soared past 7.28 crore, with the US remaining the country hit hardest by far by the health crisis gripping the world, with over three lakh deaths.
