A newborn girl died on Thursday after a warmer overheated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a government hospital in Rajasthan’s Bhilwara district, officials said.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Mahatma Gandhi Government Hospital’s Mother and Child Hospital, where another baby was also injured. According to a hospital official, the services of two contractual nursing staffers who were on duty in the NICU have been terminated with immediate effect, and an inquiry committee has been formed. The baby died when he was 21 days old. She was admitted to the NICU on October 5 because she was underweight.

She died in the early hours of Wednesday after being kept warm on Tuesday night. Her family members caused a commotion over her death, prompting action against contractual employees and the formation of an inquiry committee. “Further action will be taken based on the committee’s report,” the official said.
