Alfred Nobel was born on October 21, 1833, in Stockholm, Sweden. His father Immanuel Nobel was an inventor and engineer who built bridges and buildings in Stockholm. Alfred’s mother, Caroline Andrietta Ahlsell Nobel, was a homemaker. The couple had eight children together; however, only Alfred and three of his siblings survived to adulthood. As a young boy growing up in Sweden, Alfred attended different schools before eventually enrolling at the Royal Institute of Technology in 1850. He later left Sweden to continue his studies in France and Germany. It was during this time that he first began working with explosives after inheriting his father’s business following Immanuel’s death in 1863.

In 1864, Alfred patented his first explosive: nitroglycerin. A few years later he invented dynamite. He went on to amass a fortune through the production and sale of these products; however, he also gained infamy due to the frequent accidental explosions associated with them (including one that killed his younger brother Emil).
