Two contests comprise the O. Henry Pun-off Day competitions: Punniest of Show and Punslingers. The contestants on The Punniest of Show have 90 seconds to present prepared material based on a given theme. These performances could contain props, costumes, and music. They are graded on a scale of one to ten by the evaluators. The best three competitors are awarded the competition’s prizes.
The Punslingers competition emphasises improvisation. The contestants are paired and assigned topics to act out in real time. William Sydney Porter adopted the alias O. Henry. During the final decade of his life, he gained widespread recognition for his short stories. These tales were well-liked for their riddles, wordplay, and unexpected conclusions. O. Henry founded “The Rolling Stone,” a satirical newspaper, on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina. When “The Rolling Stone” ceased to be profitable, he began contributing to the “Houston Post.”
O. Henry worked as a bank clerk in Austin and was accused of embezzlement in 1896. In 1897, when his wife became unwell, he returned to Austin from New Orleans and then Honduras. After her demise, O. Henry was incarcerated in Ohio. This is where he started writing adventure tales. Following his release from prison in 1902, he relocated to New York City and began publishing under a pseudonym name. While incarcerated, he penned his first collection of short stories, titled “Cabbages and Kings”
