Odisha: 17-year-old girl dies after set on fire by male classmate for rejecting his proposal

A 17-year-old diploma engineering student who was allegedly set ablaze by her classmate 10 days ago succumbed to her injuries on Sunday night while undergoing treatment.

The girl was set on fire by a youth named Gopinath Khora on May 31, after she rejected his proposal.

According to reports, the girl, student of a private engineering college in Semiliguda, was staying in the area with her friends in a rented house. The accused, identified as Gopinath Khora, had proposed the girl multiple times in the recent past. The girl had rejected Gopinath’s proposal.

On the fateful day, the youth barged into the house of the girl, poured petrol on her and set her on fire. He fled the spot soon after committing the crime.

Semiliguda police station inspector in-charge Priyash Chhotray said the victim had suffered more than 50 per cent burn injuries and died in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Khara, who surrrendered before the police last week after hiding for a few days, has already been sent to jail.

Police said Khara was rejected by the girl several times and had also threatened to lodge a complaint against him. This seems to have infuriated Khara who sneaked into her rented house on May 31 with a bottle of petrol and set her on fire. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to help her.
