A group of around 160 girl students belonging to an upper primary school in (India) Odisha’s Kandhamal district today locked up the school’s main gate in protest against corporal punishment and demanding action against two women teachers.

Students of the Kasturba Project Upper Primary School which falls under Raikia block in the district resorted to protest after their repeated pleas of action, against two women teachers who beat them up as punishment for minor faults, went unheard.

A student stated that the two teachers beat them on multiple occasions.

In September, the assaulted girl students had complained to school Headmistress Snigdha Priyadarshini Parida seeking stern action against the two, Sambad English reported.

While senior officials of the Education department had visited the school for inquiry on September 16, they did not take any action against them, the students alleged.

The students then set on protest, following which ADO, BDO and BEO intervened into the matter and assured action against the teachers.

As assurances were even then not fulfilled, the students once again launched their protest today.
