Only Guwahati, Imphal of 12 N-E airports receive flights

Guwahati/Agartala, May 25 (IANS) Except Guwahati and Imphal airports, no passenger flight landed at any other airport in the north-eastern states on Monday as the Kolkata airport, hit by the cyclone Amphan last week, was shut, said top AAI officials.

Sanjeev Jindal, Airport Authority of India (AAI) Regional Executive Director (NER), said as airports in the northeast were mainly connected with the Kolkota airport, flights to most N-E airports couldn’t be operated.

“Flights to all N-E airports will resume after May 27. Flight operations at Guwahati and Imphal airports were smooth,” Jindal told IANS.

The Civil Aviation Ministry had received a request from the West Bengal government to resume domestic air operations from May 28 as the cyclone Amphan had affected the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, said another AAI official.

There are 12 airports in the northeast. They are in Guwahati, Silchar, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur (all Assam), Tezu and Pasighat (Arunachal Pradesh), Agartala (Tripura), Imphal (Manipur), Shillong (Meghalaya), Dimapur (Nagaland) and Lengpui (Mizoram).

Domestic passenger flights were restarted on Monday after two months. Different N-E states on Sunday issued separate Standard Operating Protocols (SOP) for the passengers.
