Founded in 1909 by the Optimist Club of America, the holiday was originally intended to be celebrated on April 1. The purpose was to promote optimism among people of all ages and to put an end to April Fool’s Day. But April Fool’s Day remained, and clubs across the country began to celebrate Optimist Day on different dates.
Sylvain Levesque proposed in 2013 that Optimist Day be observed on a certain date. Levesque was a member of the National Assembly as well as the Loretteville Optimist Club. Fortunately, his concept was adopted and a resolution to mark Optimist Day on the first Thursday of February was passed the same year at the Optimist International Convention. According to Levesque, the first Thursday was selected since the National Assembly begins work in the first week of February. Since then, attempts to acknowledge the accomplishments of community volunteers and youth have been pushed and encouraged.
