Origi shocks Everton with late goal, gives Liverpool 1-0 win

Liverpool, Dec 3 (IANS) Belgian striker Divock Origi netted a last gasp 1-0 winner for Liverpool over visiting Everton in the Premier League Merseyside derby.

Origi, who took the field just six minutes before second-half stoppage time on Sunday, scored the winner just before the final whistle on a close range header after a successful follow-up to his teammate’s Virgil van Dijk’s shot that Everton’s keeper Jordan Pickford failed to clear, reports Efe.

The match saw several squandered opportunities by both sides, especially by Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, as both goalkeepers were in good form.

In the first half, Liverpool dominated in terms of ball possession and had most of the chances while Everton preferred to sit back. However the Toffees’ counter-attacks were dangerous.

In the second half, Everton also showed its drive on the attack and both teams had their scoring opportunities, but still with no success until Pickford’s error awarded Liverpool the lone goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

With the win, Liverpool remains in the second spot in the standings with a two-point deficit behind leader Manchester City.

With its fourth defeat so far this season, Everton holds the sixth spot in the Premier League table with 22 points, on goal differential ahead of Manchester United.
