The crucial post of Speaker of the Haryana Legislative Assembly was decided by the Bharatiya Janata Party in a meeting on Monday, November 4. Panchkula MLA Gian Chand Gupta was unanimously elected the Speaker of the Haryana Assembly.

Gupta is a two-time MLA and was the chief whip of the BJP in the last assembly.

In the recently-concluded assembly polls, Gupta had retained his seat by defeating Congress candidate Chander Mohan with 5,633 votes.

The ruling BJP in Haryana led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar won 40. The rival Congress won 31 seats, while the less than year old Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), which broke away from the state’s once major regional Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) owing to family disputes, won 10 seats.

The INLD won a lone seat against 19 in 2014 Assembly election. Seven Independents and one each of the INLD and the Haryana Lokhit Party have also won.
