Parivartini Ekadashi 2020: Know date, timings, significance, and rituals here

Parivartini Ekadashi, also referred to as Parsava Ekadashi, Vamana Ekadashi, Jaljhilini Ekadashi, and Jayanti Ekadashi is observed on the Eleventh day of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapad month. On this day, Lord Vishnu, who is in a state of Yogic sleep (Yoga Nidra), changes his posture.

Parivartini Ekadashi 2020 date and timings:

Parivartini Ekadashi vrat will be marked on Saturday, August 29. According to drikpanchang, the Parivartini Ekadashi tithi commences at 8:38 AM on August 28 and ends at 8:17 AM on August 29, 2020. As the Hindu religion celebrates the tithi will fall after the sunrise, the Ekadashi fast will be observed on August 29.

Significance of Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat:

By observing the Parivartini Ekadashi, it is beleived that the devotees will be granted forgiveness for all the committed sins. Parivartini Ekadashi has been observed since ancient times, and it bestows the observer with happiness, wealth, and health. It relieves the sins and also liberates the devotees from the cycle of birth and death. Devotees benefit spiritual gains which help them to strengthen their willpower. Parsva Ekadashi is superior to the other Ekadashi observances as it falls during the ‘Chaturmas’ period. The significance of Parsva Ekadashi is explained in the ‘Brahma Vivarta Purana’ as a conversation between Lord Krishna and King Yudhisthira.

Parivartini Ekadashi Rituals:

  • Devotees observe a fast on Parivartini Ekadashi for 24 hours.
  • On Shukla Paksha ‘Dashami,’ the devotees consume a single meal before the sunrise. The fast is broken on Dwadashi day, only after offering prayers to Lord Vishnu and giving food to a Brahmin.
  • Several devotees who are unable to observe strict fast can keep partial fast. Consumption of dairy products, fruits and vegetable are allowed.
  • On the day of Parsva Ekadashi consuming grains, rice and beans are prohibited. The devotees should perform activities that bring them closer to God.
  • Devotees recite Vedic mantras and bhajans in praise of Lord Vishnu along with religious books like ‘Vishnu Sahasranaam.’
