On the very first day of the Parliament Monsoon Session, as many as 17 members of parliament have been tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Monday. Earlier on Sunday, five members of the Lok Sabha tested positive even before the commencement of the Monsoon Session.

According to reports, the maximum number of COVID-19 positive legislators hail from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Nearly 200 members were present in the Lok Sabha chamber and roughly 30 were seated in the visitors’ gallery located above the main chamber today. Plastic shields were installed in front of the members’ benches to ensure distance.

Here is the list of Members of Parliament who tested positive for COVID-19 on Day 1 of Parliament Monsoon Session:

  3. Parvesh Sahib Singh
  4. Sukhbir Singh,
  5. Hanuman Beniwal,
  6. Sukanata Majumdar,
  7. Goddeti Madhavi,
  8. Pratap Rao Jadav,
  9. Janardan Singh,
  10. Bidyut Baran,
  11. Pradan Baruah,
  12. N Reddeppa,
  13. Selvam G,
  14. Pratap Rao Patil,
  15. Ram Shankar Katheria,
  16. Satya Pal Singh,
  17. Rodmal Nagar.

The monsoon session 2020 of the Parliament, which commenced today, was the first Parliament session held amid the COVID-19 pandemic. All safety measures had been initiated to conduct the session as per health guidelines amid COVID-19.

In a first of its kind initiative, the members of Parliament also marked their attendance through an app on Monday, according to the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, the session will provide a total of 18 sittings spread over a period of 18 days (all the days including Saturdays and Sundays of the ensuing session will be working days) and a total of 47 items have been identified for being taken up during the Monsoon Session 2020. (These include 45 Bills and two financial items).
