Platinum Jubilee bank holiday 2023: History

The government of the United Kingdom observed Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a one-time additional bank holiday, resulting in a four-day weekend holiday from Thursday, June 2, 2022, to Sunday, June 5, 2022. The actual date of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee was February 6, 2022, the day she ascended the throne, which was also the day her father passed away. King George VI perished in his sleep at 56 after a lengthy illness. This is why she chose to commemorate her father on this date.

As a result, the Queen has decided to commemorate the 70th anniversary of her accession on June 3, 2022, as part of a four-day holiday that will include public and community events. Buckingham Palace, Fortnum & Mason and The Big Jubilee Lunch introduced the Platinum Pudding competition throughout the United Kingdom on 10 January 2022, as part of the festivities. The creator of the winning custard will be honoured and the recipe will be made available to the general public.

The Queen’s ceremonial birthday will be celebrated by The Queen’s Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour) on Thursday, June 2, 2022. Throughout the United Kingdom and U.K. Overseas Territories, over 1,500 Platinum Jubilee Beacons will be illuminated. The Thanksgiving Service for The Queen’s Reign will be held at St. Paul Cathedral on June 3, 2022.

The Queen will attend The Derby at Epsom Downs on Saturday, June 4, 2022, followed by a Platinum Party at the Palace. The Big Jubilee Lunch will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2022. The Big Lunch, held annually since 2009, celebrates community connections. The Platinum Jubilee Pageant recounts The Queen’s 70-year tenure with all the merriment, pageantry, and royal splendour for which the United Kingdom is renowned.
