Police have evidence of violence during BJP protest march: Chief Secy

Kolkata, Oct 8 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandopadhyay said on Thursday that the state government has got enough evidence of violence during Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) protest march in Kolkata and its twin district Howrah.

“Many police personnel have been injured. We have seized one fire arm. But still they tried to take control of the situation with patience. We have got enough evidence,” Bandopadhyay told a press conference here.

He said the state government is bound to allow any democratic and peaceful march, but to counter any untoward incident, the police have to take necessary action against the protesters.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, the newly-appointed national President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), however, criticised the state government for using blue colour in water cannons.

“A dark blue chemical was used in the water cannons. In no country in the world the water cannons use such blue chemical. They used the dark blue-coloured liquid which burns the human skin. It also results in vomiting and burning of the skin,” said Tejasvi.

The BJYM national President said that he would write to the Central government to enquire into the matter and demand a probe to find out what was this blue-coloured chemical used in the water cannons.

“This is a gross abuse of human rights,” he said.

Bandopadhyay, however, replied by saying the claim was totally wrong.

“The intent, globally, to use colour water is to identify a person post dispersal for further necessary actions as per the law if deemed fit and if required,” he said.
